Aquarium of the Pacific to
GlasPro Custom Digital Art
Visitors to the Aquarium of the Pacific gift shop now have the chance to experience one of the most productive and dynamic marine ecosystems on Earth - with out even getting their feet wet. The Kelp Forrest glass wall in the Aquarium gift shop utilizes a high-resolution underwater digital image to create a panoramic view of an actual kelp forrest off the California coast. Comprised of twenty-six twelve-foot tall panels, the wall features a composite digital photograph of marine life in it's natural environment and spans some one-hundred feet. This combination of digital photography and laminated glass gives viewers the sensation of free-diving the kelp forrest without ever having to leave the shore.
This project, which recently earned Glass Magazine's Most Innovative Decorative Glass Project, Commercial Interior, posed a number of unique challenges. GlasPro employed the talents of a diverse team of photographers and craftsmen to successfully take the idea from concept to completion. The installation was created by capturing a series of underwater mosaic photos - over 1200 in all - and manually combining the images using digital imaging software. A number of photographic techniques were employed to create individual composite images of the background, mid-field and foreground areas. These elements were then "stitched" together in a master photo-composite.
Beginning with development and production of the stunning digital imagery that makes up the installation and carrying through to the completion of bending, tempering, fabrication and lamination, GlasPro's technical acumen and commitment to quality throughout was crucial to realization of this vision. GlasPro remains committed to offering it's clients this high level of creative freedom by continuing to expand it's capabilities and techniques and looks forward to bringing the next wave of designs to life.
